16 May 2021 - Rare Plant Fair - The Old Rectory, Quenington

This year's fair was supported by 22 outstanding plants-men and women. Visitors enjoyed discussing the plants with the growers, having more time than is usually the case.  Sarah Bliss of the Gilbertine Cafe in Poulton was located in the Pool House and supplied mountains of cake and tea as well as pre-ordered picnic boxes.

Lots of fresh air rain water and hand sanitiser ensured all was Covid safe.

This year's two supported charities - The Nelson Trust and ZANE (supporting people in Zimbabwe) -  each benefited to the tune of £1000 from the  entrance fees.  Each of these charities is small and local and the money raised will hugely benefit the beneficiaries.

The gardens of The Old Rectory are open again for the National Garden Scheme on Sunday 11th July when there will be a mix of ticket bookings and come as you please.  Teas are being provided by the Friends of Fairford and Lechlade communities. This link gives more information about that event.

March 2020 - The River Room Sessions for 'Mindsong'

Sadly, this two-day event had to be cancelled because of the restrictions necessary to inhibit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. However, the artists who were due to be taking part have each made their own special contribution by video which you can see below. There's a video for each of the two days.

Of course, the aim was to raise some funds for MindSong. If you enjoy the videos please consider giving. Details of how to do this are shown below the two video links. Thank you!

13 November 2018 - Quenington Society Visit to Historic Reading

Picture
Those who did not manage to take part in a really interesting visit the Quenington Society paid to the heart of Reading really missed out.   Members were welcomed into the church hall of the RC church of St James which was Pugin’s first essay in  church architecture. (1840). His refigured font (pictured) was originally  part of the rich decoration of this great Cluniac Abbey which was one of the most important in Britain.  Henry 1st, son of William the Conqueror, planned this as the royal burial ground in 1121.  Built on two water ways, the Kennet and the Thames, it was in easy reach of London. Empress Matilda, Henry’s daughter , window of the Holy Roman Emperor retired home to England with the Hand of St James of Compostela which she gave to the Abbey.  A wizened  hand was found in a tin box during  the building  of Reading Gaol. The hand now is at Marlow. Might this be St. James?

Picture
Picture
The first visit was to  the museum to see the ‘Coronation of the Virgin’ linked to the one at Quenington and a replica of the Bayeaux Tapestry embroidered by 35 ladies of The Leek Embroidery Society in the 1886; a stunning example of Arts and Crafts work.  Following picnics back in the church hall it was onto the awe inspiring ruins of this once great Abbey where its chapter house sheltered our early parliament from time to time.  Henry VIII destroyed it with  vengeance.

Our thanks to John and Lindsay Mullaney for their companionship, knowledge and time and to Fr. John of the church of St. James for allowing us use of the carpark and the church hall.

All are welcome to the  Quenington Society’s  visits or talks.  If you would like to suggest a subject do get in touch with Lucy Abel Smith

Bethany and Joseph Complete the 100KM Challenge

A brother and sister have completed a 100KM Cotswold Way Challenge to raise money for a wildlife charity.

Bethany and Joseph Powell, aged 18 and 19, of Coln St Aldwyns, near Cirencester, joined Team Panda across two days, June 30 and July 1, to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund. They joined more than 1,400 other walkers, joggers and runners who took on the challenge for their own respected charities as they trekked from Bath to Cheltenham.
It was a tough route, with over 2,400 metres of climb across the 100km.

Bethany said: “Some parts were hard going but we really enjoyed the experience. Reaching the finish line was quite emotional!
“As lifelong animal lovers, we want to help support the World Wildlife Fund in protecting the amazing endangered animals we share the planet with.
“We are particularly concerned about the shocking levels of elephant poaching in Africa and for the Amur leopard.”
The siblings have been raising money over the last few months by holding a garage sale and selling at car boot sales.

They also held a tea and a cake party that raised £345 through donations, a raffle and selling their own home made cards and animal figures. They baked and decorated cakes and prepared quiz sheets over numerous days prior to the event.
So far they have raised more than £1,800, more than double their original £850 target. They would both like to do more fundraising in the future, but have yet to arrange any further events.

Corinium Run 2017 - 23 April 2017

Picture
The Corinium Run is organised by Cirencester Car Club. Now in its 14th year, the event is a scenic tour through many of the traffic-free roads that are to be found in the Cotswolds. Once again this year, the Run came through Hatherop, Coln and Quenington; it was a great opportunity to see some classic cars (65 this year) driving past at a leisurely pace.

Church bell-ringing competition at Coln - 1 April 2017

The bells at Coln St Aldwyns are part of the Cirencester Branch of the Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.

Om 1 April 2017 teams from across the association came to Coln for one of their annual ringing competitions. Coln St hosted the eight-bell completion. The ringers were a happy and sociable crowd who were only too happy to chat and explain the techniques involved and what the judges would be looking for.
